Thinking Innovatively About the Risks of Tech Innovation
In today’s blog, we will discuss the importance of thinking innovatively about the risks of tech innovation. While many reports on technology focus on its potential to transform our lives, it is crucial to understand the possible negative impacts as well. Although it’s hard to imagine how new technologies like smart shoes or rollable TVs could pose risks, we must consider the broader implications. The ever-expanding fields of virtual reality and the Internet of Things (IoT) provide endless possibilities, but they also bring certain risks.
All Technologies Come with Risks
When we look at the overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding technology, it’s easy to overlook the potential consequences. However, it’s vital to address the challenges that come with developing technologies that benefit society, not just the creators. For example, consider the advancements in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). While each of these technologies has the potential to positively impact our lives, they are not inherently safe. There are concerns about the rapid growth of AI and its consequences, as well as the vulnerabilities in IoT that can expose everyday devices to cyber threats. Additionally, these technologies have the potential to widen the gap between the privileged and the disadvantaged.
How Do We Rethink Risk?
At the Arizona State University Risk Innovation Lab, we are developing a new approach to risk management. This innovative method aims to open up new ideas and possibilities, both in understanding risks and managing them. We refer to this approach as Risk Innovation. By reimagining how we view and handle risk, we create new opportunities to address challenges in technology development. Importantly, this approach emphasizes protecting the tangible value that individuals, communities, and organizations stand to lose. It’s about finding ways to safeguard what matters most to those involved in these technologies.
